PDP

I wrote my PDP the other evening and developed on my goals and achievements from the last Professional Frameworks modules. My first 'task' is to improve on my grades for each module that I hand in, as last year I let myself down on two grades because I was not inspired by the topics at all. This year I have made myself really inspired about the video project and my dissertation, and chose things that have really interested my so I am passionate all the way through the module. I have highlighted activities that need to be undertaken to to reach my goal, which is speak to tutors more when I have an issue rather than waiting for it to resolve itself, and research more practitioners and visit more gallery shows to strengthen my research.

My second 'task' is to research and apply for PGCE courses for the next academic year. The application process opens at the end of October, and I need to write a personal statement and construct a strong application to make sure I stand out for a place. I visited the Edge Hill open day and decided that it was the place I wanted to study first, so that is my first option. I have two more options available so I need to visit more open days for Universities that are closer to home, such as Blackburn and Bolton, or Manchester.

My third task is to improve on my fashion, editorial and child photography to make my freelance business more established and well-known. I have developed my passion for child photography over the summer being at Camp Modin, so decided to pursue it and photograph my friends children for promotion. It got a lot of good feedback and a lot of people wanted to use my services to photograph their babies and children over the Christmas period. The activities that I need to undertake are to promote my business as a producer of commercial, fashion, editorial and children photography, as well as network with local photographers, make up artists and stylists for fashion photo shoots. I plan to do one fashion or portrait photoshoot per week, apart from when I have deadlines or holidays.

My fourth and penultimate 'task' is to improve on my video and editing skills. I work with my partner who produces commercial and corporate video productions alongside his studies as a photographer, so I often help him on shoots and edits when he has a large workload. I would like to improve my skills on this in my free time, when I have minimal work to do, so that my career prospects are greater when I leave University.

My final 'task' is to be motivated. I often find that further into my studies I seem to get more bored and lazy then I am at the beginning in September. I often become really lazy with work around December and May when the academic term is coming to a close. I cannot let this happen this year as it could affect my final grade and we are so close to finishing the degree programme. I find that talking to tutors about my work and making a work schedule should make me feel more motivated at all times.

TALK: Victorian Optical Entertainments - Andrew Gill (Magic Lantern Show)

To kick off our Professional Frameworks study, we were given a fascinating lecture on Victorian lantern photographs and the history behind cinema. Andrew Gill is the owner of Victorian Optical Entertainment, and gave us an insight into how people used to view photographs until well into the 20th century, followed by an amazing cinema viewing of the slides he owned and treasures. He showed us a Magic Lantern (see below), and said "The magic lantern was the forerunner of the pre-digital, 35mm slide projector which, you may recall (if you're of a certain age), was a device used in the later 20th century to inflict our holiday photos on our friends and neighbours." (Huffington Post, 2012)

The most interesting thing that I learnt from this lecture was how amazing quality the slides were, they were like nothing I have ever seen before. The crispness and quality of the details were amazing, and better than I've seen on my DSLR camera! I also learnt about the history of the "peep show", now a common reference to a dirty or sexy show, it originally began as a means for children to see a 3D view in a box.

This lecture inspired me to look into different ways to present my work and how my film will be view in my Advanced Photographic Practices module. I was especially inspired by the Zoetrope concept, where you spin a circle around to reveal a moving photograph. It would be something amazing to make and view in a gallery as part of an exhibition. I am also very interested in the history of photography and art, so this presentation proved interesting for me.

Briefing

We received our brief, very similar to last time, is asking us to develop our personal career paths and dreams in the form of a module. I found last years module very helpful as it helped me develop my passion for fashion and editorial photography, as well as develop my studio skills and make me more confident to go and approach companies to offer my services. I plan to write a review of a photographer once a week to broaden my knowledge, as well as one photo shoot a week of any genre to improve my skills and make me a stronger candidate for a number of job opportunites.
